GO DREADNOUGHT!

It began Monday morning, the day after the 1982 Reno Air Races. Frank Sanders held a family meeting with his wife and business partner Ruth along with their sons Dennis and Brian.  Frank, one of the great salesmen in warbird aviation, opened the discussion with, “Boys, how would you like to build an airplane that goes Really FAST?”  Frank described the concept of installing the largest production reciprocating aircraft engine, the mighty Pratt & Whitney R-4360, on a Hawker Sea Fury T.MK-20 airframe.

Over the next 51-weeks, the Sanders and a small group of highly skilled volunteers designed and built Dreadnought, the fastest Unlimited air racer of the day.  The concept was simple; the execution required 16+ hours of focused work every day, no days off.  On August 6th, Frank test flew Dreadnought, 35 days before the September event.  When flight tests were completed, the team figured they’d get a couple days off, but the racer was still in bare metal.  Frank insisted, “If Dreadnought isn’t painted in race colors, we aren’t going to Reno.”  Dreadnought’s iconic silver with tapered red stripe and British insignia is based on a Hawker Aircraft racing Fury NX802.

Dreadnought dominated the competition: qualified fastest, led every lap and won every race in 1983 to earn its first National Championship.  In 1990, Frank Sanders passed.  In homage to Frank’s inspiration and leadership, the Sanders maintain Dreadnought in its original racing configuration with no further modifications. Dreadnought never faded.  Frank’s racing adage was, “To finish first, first you must finish.”

DREADNOUGHT & TORGOEN PARTNERSHIP

Precision, quality and integrity are disciplines shared by the Sanders family with Dreadnought and Torgoen in producing the T18 Dreadnought Watch.  Success comes, not by chance, but through constant attention to the precision details of their respective crafts.  Best-in-Class is earned in every lap we race and every Torgoen watch we make.
