Torgoen Adventurers: Christina Renteria

Posted on

Christina Renteria, this week's Torgoen Adventurer, started flying to help fulfill the dreams of her step dad who was unable to fly due to a heart transplant. Through this experience, she has gained a passion for aviation.

Christina shared with us some of her favorite things about being a pilot as well as her top 5 essential items to have in flight.

How did you get into aviation?

I was always interested in aviation growing up, but what made me really pursue it was my step dad. He had always wanted to fly but couldn’t because of his heart transplant, so when we found out that he needed a second transplant and might not make it, I started flying to help him fulfill his dream. I never stopped flying after that (:

What is your current job?

I am the Chief Pilot for a Part 91 flight department. Instead of an airline, I work for individuals who own their own aircraft and fly their planes as well as manage the scheduling, maintenance and all day to day operations.

Tell us about your most memorable adventure/ flight.

One of my favorite flights was landing in Sedona, AZ. It’s like landing on an aircraft carrier!

What is the most important thing to remember when operating an aircraft?

Always be one step ahead of the plane and think ahead about what you need to do. Also, it’s a machine, make it do what you want it to do.

What are some misconceptions about being a female pilot?

Some people aren’t used to seeing a girl (especially a young one) in the cockpit, but rest assured that we have been through the training and have earned our positions.

What is your favorite thing about being a pilot?

Flying makes me feel free and allows me to hit the reset button on day to day life. There isn’t much to do in my part of the world, so being able to travel and experience new places is amazing.

What part of the world have you not yet been to that is on your bucket list?

I would LOVE to experience more of Europe. Germany, Spain and Iceland are on my bucket list.

What are your 5 essential items when in flight?

Ipad

Pens

My toolbox (contains a flashlight and miscellaneous items just in case)

Batteries

My Phone (For music and pictures when it’s mounted)

What are you reading/ listening to?

I’m almost always listening to Mumford and Sons radio on Pandora and am reading Woman Up.

How is flying as a career different from flying for fun or as a hobby?

Only difference is that I’m getting paid to do what I would do for fun ;)

What advice would you give to young girls about becoming a pilot?

Don’t let anyone hold you back, including your own doubts. You CAN and will succeed at whatever you truly put your mind to.
